Glencore Mining Case Study

Sphere's Aerial Division collaborated with the University of New South (UNSW) and Glencore Mining. The aim of the project was to assist in capturing a range of different aerial representations of rock faces and mining shelves.
In order to collect this data. UNSW came to us with a fascinating payload requirement - the Phoenix Scout LIDAR - a cutting adge piece of surveying technology that calculates distances using a pulsed laser light. Within a matter of hours, our highly qualified team had the payload mounted and ready for flight.
Drone Setup
Our craft of for the LIDAR was the DJI Matrice 600 with an A3 Pro upgrade. The six motor and six battery capability provides the craft with high levels of redundancy. This is essential when operatin a $120k piece of technology. Additionally, the open-source payload functionality of up to 6kg is necessary to mount the unit? whilst still maintaining sufficient flight times for data collection. A DJI Phantom 4 Pro was also brought along to compare the accuracy and efficiency of aerial photogrammetry versus laser imaging.
